CSEd Availability KPI Washington 2023-24
Education administrators, teachers, and advocates should use the following CS Education availability key performance indicators (KPI) in the dashboards and reports in Washington CS and CTE Education Analytics 2023-24 to compare the state of computer science education in ESDs, districts, and schools in Washington of varying sizes and demographics:
- CS Available School Percentage – the percentage of schools that have a CS course
- CS Available Student Percentage – the percentage of students in schools that have a CS course
Availability KPI (key performance indicators) measure whether a CS course is available to students in a school. At least one student must be enrolled in a CS course for the course to be considered available.
The CS Available School Percentage and CS Available Student Percentage may differ greatly because schools vary in size. Because these availability metrics are based on school characteristics, they are more useful for comparing states and ESDs than districts and schools.

CS Available School Percentage
The CS Available School Percentage (for high schools) is the main KPI used in the 2025 State of AI and CS Education Report (herein 2025 national report) and its predecessors. Page 56 of the 2025 national report gives the following results for CS Available School Percentage:

While Washington’s results on this KPI significantly trail national averages, the state has a disproportionately large number of small schools (< 500 students), which weighs heavily on this metric. Because small schools have much less scheduling flexibility, they are much less likely (43% vs. 91% nationwide) to offer CS nationwide than large schools (> 1200 students).
There are significant differences between the results reported in the 2025 national report and its predecessors, and the similar metrics calculated using OSPI’s 2023-24 K–12 Computer Science Education Data Summary Report (herein OSPI data). The ProgramAvailability_State ply of the OSPI data reports that the CS Available School Percentage for Washington was 45.5% for 2023-24.
The reasons for these differences include the following:
- The 2025 national report and its predecessors only look at high school data, while Washington data looks at all schools with at least one grade 6 – 12. Parsing out only high school data from the OSPI data shows that Washington was at 60.8% in 2023-24.
- National data uses a much narrower definition of a CS course than Washington data
- Differences in timing between the two data sets
These differences should also be considered when comparing any national data in the 2025 State of AI and CS Education report and its predecessors to the dashboards and reports in OSPI data.
CS Available Student Percentage
Because the 2023-24 K–12 Computer Science Education Data Summary Report provides detailed data not available in the 2025 national report and its predecessors, Washington can also publish a CS Available Student Percentage metric on the front of the Washington CSEd Enrollment Dashboard: 74.3%
The CS Available Student Percentage shows what percentage of students are in schools where CS is available. Although Washington trails the national average in the benchmark CS Available School Percentage (51% to 60%) for high schools, analysis of the 2024 State of CS Education report and other data sources suggests that Washington’s CS Available Student Percentage for high schools may be higher than the national average. Washington does well in providing CS in larger and mid-sized schools which helps its CS Available Student Percentage but not so well with small schools:
