Top Schools and Districts for Girls in CSEd 2023-24

Top Schools for Girls CSEd Washington 2023-24a

This post identifies the schools and districts in Washington with the highest (and lowest) Gender Relative CS participation rates in 2023-24.

The dashboard CS Education in Washington Demographic Drilldown 2019-24 provides data on the percentage of girls enrolled in CS in a particular school, district, or ESD. The dashboard also also provides data on the Boy CS Participation Rate for Boys, the overall CS Participation Rate, and the Gender Relative CS Participation Rate (Girl CS Participation Rate / Boy CS Participation Rate). While this dashboard makes it easy to retrieve information on a particular entity, it is not necessarily easy to identify the schools and districts in Washington that provide the most support for girls in CS education.

Identifying the schools and districts that support girls in CSEd well takes on additional meaning when we look at national trends. Washington (49.2%) trails the already concerning national average (50.6%) in Gender Relative CS Participation Rate. In Washington, there are over two boys for every girl participating in CS education. In contrast, Washington does extremely well compared to national averages in Relative CS Participation Rates for race/ethnicity, income, ELL status, and disability status. See CSEd Relative Participation KPI Washington 2023-24 for more details.

The top districts and schools for Girls in CSEd in Washington for 2023-24 (Gender CS Participation Rate in parentheses) are:

  • District: Granite Falls School District (104.8%)
  • High School: Connell High School (151.9%)
  • Middle School: International School (112.0%)

Notes

  • The 2025 State of AI and CS Education Report and its predecessors provide nationwide data that small schools (<=500 students) are significantly less likely to offer computer science courses. Washington shows similar data. This report does not include any schools or districts with less than 500 students.
  • Schools and districts with less than 8% overall CS Participation Rate are excluded from consideration from these lists. 8% overall CS Participation was an arbitrarily chosen guideline signaling that the CS program in the schools/district was established enough that the school/district should not just consider overall enrollment but also the gender composition of that enrollment. The overall CS Participation Rate for the state of Washington in 2023-24 was 8.6%
  • “High School” refers to schools with two grades between 9-12, at least one of which is 11th or 12th grade.
  • “MIddle schools” refers to schools with two grades between 6 – 8 at least one which is 7th or 8th grade.
  • “High School” results include schools that are both “High Schools” and “Middle Schools” (e.g., a 7 – 12 school). All student enrollment data from schools that were both “High School” and “Middle School” were included in the data displayed, regardless of student grade. Similarly, “Middle School” results include schools that are both “High Schools” and “Middle Schools” (e.g., a 7-12 school. Due to this limitation, some schools appear in both high school and middle school lists with the exact same data.
