Washington CSEd Availability and Participation KPI 2026
Percentage of Schools Offering CS
According to the Washington CS Education and CTE Analytics 2026 project which visualizes data from OSPI’s 2024-25 K-12 Computer Science Education Data Report, the percentage of schools offering a computer science course (blue) stayed steady. 46.6% of schools offered CS in 2023-24, and 46.5% of schools offered CS in 2024-26.

For this metric, all schools that had at least one grade level between 6-12 (including K-6) were included in the denominator. Because of this inclusiveness, the percentage of all schools offering CS (45.5%) is less than the percentage of middle schools (45.6%) and high schools (60.9%) in 2024-25. Schools were counted as middle schools if they had two grade levels between 6-8 and were considered as high schools if they had two grade levels 9-12 with the highest being 11+.
Schools were considered to be offering CS if they had a least one student in a course considered to be CS by OSPI.
Washington state analytics is unique in that it reports on CSEd in grades 6-12. In major national CSEd analytics projects such as the ECEP Common Metrics Project and the State of CS+AI Education report, only high school data is considered.
Percentage of Students Offered CS
Despite slight increases in the percentage of students in our high school and middle schools who were offered CS, the percentage of all of our 6-12 students who were in a school that offered CS decreased slightly from 74.4% in 2023-24 to 73.9% in 2024-25.

The percentage of students who were in a school that offered CS is significantly higher than percentage of schools that offer CS because larger schools are much more likely to support a CS elective than a smaller school is. Further, as documented in the blog post State of CS Education Washington 2025 at FUTURE Conference, while Washington does well in offering CS in its large and mid-sized schools, it lags in providing CS in its smaller (< 500) schools and has a disproportionately large number of small schools compared to other states.
Percentage of Students Enrolled in CS
The percentage of students enrolled in CS in Washington dropped for the second straight year. The percentage of students enrolled in CS dropped to 8.3% in 2024-25 from 8.7% in 2023-24 and 9.3% in 2022-23, about 10.8% in two years.

Further, most of this drop in CS enrollment of 10.8% in two years is due to fewer students taking a CS elective in schools where CS is offered. Using the data above we can estimate that the percentage of students enrolled in CS in schools that offered CS dropped from 12.4% in 2022-23 to 11.2% in 2024-25, a 9.7% decline. We can estimate that roughly 90% of the decline in percentage of CS enrollments over the past two years is due to students not taking a CS elective even when it is offered their school.
