2026 PK-12 CS Standards:  A Sociotechnical Approach

The 2026 PK-12 CS Standards view computing as sociotechnical – the interaction and dependency between human social and technical systems. Because computing is woven into every aspect of our lives, students need more than technical skills. They need to understand how computing and society shape one another. Ethical and social questions are embedded throughout the 2026 PK-12 CS Standards

Ethics is both content and practice. The standards at all levels describe activities including ethical design, critical inquiry, responsible use, advocacy, and “hopeful reimagining.” They also caution against presenting technology as neutral, inevitable, or independent of human decisions.   Of the 196 PK-12 foundational computer standards listed, 77 (39%) include ethics and social responsibility as an explicit practice.

The 2026 CSTA PK-12 CS Standards is more structural in its approach than the traditional standards-document treatment of ethics as a separate strand, elective topic, or concluding discussion question.
